Chapter Twelve

Early Monday morning, Tom sat at his desk in his office deep within the Archives, staring blankly at the full translation Ruanna had made of Begni’s letter. Moira had left him there with strict instructions to lock the door after her and not leave without calling her first, not for any reason.

Apparently, she’d lied when she’d told him he didn’t need her permission to go to the bathroom.

As soon as he’d judged her safely away, he’d unlocked the door and sat down, and had promptly lost himself in thoughts of her.

He yanked off his reading glasses and dropped them onto the desk. God. How could a man deal with a woman like her? He’d been furious with her on Saturday, for knowingly putting herself in harm’s way when she clearly hadn’t been up to it, and for the asinine ultimatum she’d laid down, brushing off his say as if it didn’t matter one bit what he wanted out of life, only what she wanted him to do.

The funny thing was, he was pretty sure it didn’t. Spending so much time with her, beginning to learn her inside and out, had pushed him beyond infatuation and precariously close to the edge of love. He rubbed a hand over the ache in his heart. For as long as he’d known Moira, one certainty had guided his actions. She’d never fall in love with him, never submit her will, never become mortal. He’d thought the situation hopeless, well beyond his control, and had chosen to pursue a less passionate romance with Naomi rather than risk losing his heart to an uncaring Moira.

That had been before she’d elbowed her way into his life and given him a chance to get to know her. How charming she could be when they were together, her laughter over the silliest things. Her refusal to eat anything green other than lettuce no matter how much he coaxed. The warmth in her lilting voice, in odd moments when other women would’ve loosed their tempers. The way she fell asleep instantly at night and woke the same way in the morning, clinging to him every moment in between, her nude body tangled in his.

He was beginning to depend on her being there with him. She’d wiggled her way under his skin, and he liked it, so much he was willing to consider the insane and bend to her will.

What if accepting her claim and allowing her to dictate nearly every aspect of his life was the only way he could have her?

A light hand rapped on the door. Naomi poked her head in, a shy smile on her face. “Hello, Tom. Are you busy?”

He smiled and stood, waving her in. “Never too busy for you. How’s Kara?”

“Wonderful. Her husband came home Saturday night.” Naomi shut the door behind herself and sank gracefully into a chair in front of his desk. “I see you survived all the drama and fuss.”

“You could say that.”

Her dark gaze turned speculative. “Moira treated you well?”

Oh, God, had she, until that blasted ultimatum.
